In 2003, Friedman left Manhattan where she had been living since the 1970s to settle in Ulster County in upstate New York. The new work grew from an intuitive process rather than any system, and many of the paintings are based upon small studies and travel.

Friedman has had six solo shows in the Chelsea district of New York, the James McNeil Whistler Museum (MA), and the Booth Western Art Museum(GA). Her work was chosen in 2013 by the US Dept of State - Art in Embassies Program for exhibitions at the US Embassies in Djibouti, E. Africa and Colombo, Sri Lanka and included in exhibits at the Albright Knox Museum, the Attleboro Museum, the Hammond Museum and is in numerous private and corporate collections including Pfizer, IBM, McGraw Hill and the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Sarasota. She has been awarded seven art residencies from the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts,Tyrone Guthrie Center (Ireland), and Valparaiso (Spain). Listed in Who's Who in American Art, she received a BA/MFA from Queens College, an Ed.D. in Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College and studied at the New York Studio School.
Friedman's work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the James McNeil Whistler Museum, the Galleria Nacional Museum in Costa Rica, and numerous solo shows in New York City including a recent exhibit at the Prince Street Gallery in Chelsea and Noho Gallery. Her work was selected in 2013 by the U.S. Department of State Art-In-Embassies Program for the US Embassy in Djibouti, E. Africa and Colombo, Sri Lanka.
